Digital+, also known as Canal+, came up basically to promote and establish open European standards for set-top boxes. It is meant to have a single user interface for the reception of broadcast TV and broadband multi-media operations.
Originally French, the main staples of Canal+ are Spanish, basically Spanish football, bullfighting and recent movies. Canal+ came to Spain in 1990 where it was launched by Sogecable as an analogue pay channel, similar to the French version. In 1997, new channels using Canal+ were launched in Spain. Later Canal+ became a part of Digital+ alliance, which changed its name to Canal+ in October 2011.
Until 2003, colour branding was used to identify channels, which was abandoned and several movie and sports channels were added. In 2005, the Spanish government allowed Digital+ to become a 24-hour free to air network. From November 2005, its analogue terrestrial frequencies were given to Sogecable’s new channel named Cuatro (“Four”). Canal+/Digital+ is available on the 19e and Hispasat satellites. Digital+ has got ahigh-definition version of Canal+ (Canal+ HD). In 2010 it became the first Spanish television platform to offer 3D through Canal+ 3D.
